How to renew your residence permit in Spain in 2027

Reviewed on October 28, 2026

Short answer

You apply for renewal in the 2 months (60 days) before your permit expires or, at the latest, in the 3 months (90 days) after. You pay the fee modelo 790 código 052, submit the application online in Mercurio or at the Oficina de Extranjería, and keep the receipt (resguardo): while you wait, your permit stays valid. If you have the 1-year permit from the 2026 regularisation, it is not renewed: you modify it to another permit.

When to apply for renewal

Check the expiry date on your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, your foreigner ID card) and on the decision (resolución) that granted your permit. You can apply from 2 months before that date. If you miss it, you can still apply in the next 3 months, but you may get a fine. More than 3 months after expiry, it is no longer a renewal and you may end up without legal status.

In 2027 it is wise to start early. Applications for the extraordinary regularisation were submitted from April to 30 June 2026 (1.174.978 applications, according to the Ministerio de Inclusión), so many 1-year permits expire between April and June 2027. If your permit expires in those months, start collecting papers about 3 months before.

Step by step

First, find out which type of permit you have. Each one has its own information sheet (hoja informativa) on the Ministerio de Inclusión website: for example, Hoja 13 for residence and work as an employee, or Hoja 7 for non-lucrative residence. The sheet gives the exact requirements and the form (for example, EX-03).

Next, collect your documents: the signed form, a full copy of your valid passport, a copy of your TIE and proof that you still meet the requirements (contract or vida laboral work history, payslips, financial means, your children's school enrolment, etc.). Documents from other countries must be translated into Spanish.

Then pay the fee modelo 790 código 052 on the fees page (pasarela de tasas) of the Administraciones Públicas e-office, choosing the renewal section (epígrafe) for your permit. Submit the application online in Mercurio (with a digital certificate, Cl@ve or a representative) or at the registry of the Oficina de Extranjería (immigration office) in your province. Keep the resguardo with the date: it is your proof that you applied on time.

How much it costs

The permit fee is modelo 790 código 052. According to the tables published for 2026, renewal of temporary residence and work costs about 16,40 €. The valid amount is the one shown when you create the form, so check it there.

When the renewal is granted, you also pay for the card: modelo 790 código 012, 19,30 € for a renewal. Check the current amount on the Policía Nacional website before paying.

While you wait, and after

If you apply on time, your old permit stays valid until they answer. Always carry your TIE (even if it has expired) together with the resguardo. The Administration has 3 months to decide. For renewals of residence and work, non-lucrative residence and family reunification, if there is no answer, silence is positive (silencio positivo: no answer means granted), according to the information sheets; check the sheet for your permit to see if this applies to you.

When you are notified that it is granted, you have 1 month to apply in person for the new TIE. You book the fingerprint appointment (cita previa, option 'Policía - toma de huellas') on the official Administraciones Públicas cita previa website. Renewal is usually granted for 4 years, unless you qualify for long-term residence.

If your permit is from the 2026 regularisation

The 1-year permit of Real Decreto 316/2026 is not renewed like the others. According to the official questions and answers of the Ministerio de Inclusión, when it expires you must apply for a modification to another permit in the Reglamento (article 191 of Real Decreto 1155/2024), with the same deadline: 2 months before or 3 months after expiry. Only if you cannot apply for any modification is an exceptional 1-year extension possible, for example if you are actively looking for work and registered with the public employment service. Can I renew if my TIE has already expired?

Yes, up to 3 months (90 days) after expiry, but you may be fined. After that deadline it is no longer a renewal.

Do I need an appointment to submit the renewal?

You can submit it online in Mercurio or at the registry of the Oficina de Extranjería. The fingerprint appointment for the new TIE is booked after the permit is granted, on the official cita previa website.

Can I travel or work while I wait?

If you applied on time, your old permit stays valid until you get an answer. Carry your TIE together with the resguardo of your application.

How long does the renewed permit last?

Usually 4 years, unless you qualify for a long-term permit (usually after 5 years of legal and continuous residence).

Does the 2026 regularisation permit renew by itself?

No. After one year you must apply for a modification to another permit or, if you cannot, for the exceptional extension.
